WELCOME!!! to the new and improved BearBriefs. The first change you will notice, is that the briefs have been converted from a simple published PDF page format to an official BLOG site…(yes we certainly are hi-tech now!!!) This helps us eliminate duplicating a lot of the work involved in keeping you informed of the happenings here within the club. You will also notice a link to the official Club Calendar, random photos from the website, and to past briefs as well. Want to view a previous Briefs article without scrolling all the way down the page? Just click on the Archives link on the RIGHT of the page for the month that you want to view, and it jumps you right to that month. Want to know whats activities are planned for the month??? Click on the calendar tab at the TOP of the page, and you are taken to the club calendar. Those of you with smart phones you can subscribe to this blog via the RSS link located at the bottom of the page. (You can even subscribe to the calendar as well, so you can stay on top of any changes to the calendar…just click on the subscribe link at the bottom of it’s page). We hope you find the new format easy to navigate, and a continued benefit of your HOT Bear membership.
These BUSY summer months have kept us here at the HOT Bears hopping from place to place and event to event. Because we have not published the Briefs for the last 3 months, I want to recap a few of the many events the HOT Bears have been involved in or attended.
Austin Pride Parade
The HOT Bears once again braved the heat and downtown crowds to march in the annual Pride Parade. We had a GREAT turnout of 30+ marchers who helped us carry our TEXAS SIZED Bear Flag down the streets of Downtown Austin to the cheers of thousands of parade watchers. It was a great night and we want to thank all of those who supported us. We also want to thank club member Charlie Durbin (Durbin Industrial) for sewing those VERY LONG strips of fabric together and creating a flag we can all be so proud to display! (The BEARS not only marched in the Austin parade, but also joined their bear brothers from the Houston Area Bears and marched with them as well through the streets of the Montrose District. Many thanks to the triad and membership of HAB as for making us feel so welcome and allowing us to share in your event as well.
Bear Movie Night
Many thanks to Pete Reid for opening up his new home to the membership for Movie Night! We had approximately 15 members and friends who brought snacks and refreshments as we enjoyed a great Hollywood classic…..’Some Like It HOT!’ Peter has a very lovely home and we want to say thanks for making us feel so welcome.
Bear Dip 1
Former HOT Bear member Vern Hurrell and his partner Glen opened their home and pool to the Bears for a nice refreshing respite from the July heat. Burgers and dogs were grilled and members brought plenty of potluck side dishes to feed everyone there and then some! THANKS Vern and Glen!!!
July 4th River Party
After being postponed due to bad river conditions on the 4th of July, the party finally got off the ground in August. We had a great time hanging out at Daniel Trevino’s home on the banks of the Colorado River. We cooked out on the grille and had a splashing good time. Many thanks to Daniel for allowing us to party at his place.
Tainted Love 3 – Back to the 80′s
The RHEA Sisters (Vincente Vasquez and Manny Woodward) were asked to help out the Lonestar Leathermen raise much needed money for the Wright House Wellness Center…and the Sisters said YES! The event was held at the Rusty Spurs and together with the other performers helped the Leathermen raise over $1000 toward a very worthy cause. WATCH the video!! (use the 360p or 480p setting at the bottom of the screen for better viewing results)
Bears On The Guadalupe
Over 100 Bears from all over the state of Texas converged on the banks of the Guadalupe River in Canyon Lakes Texas for the first of what we hope to be many events planned to get bears from all over to gather together and have a good time. There were members from the Dallas Bears, Bears of San Antonio, Lonestar Bears, HOT Bears, Houston Area Bears, Bayou City Bears, and many others. The weekend kicked off with a Meat-n-GRRReet at the Rusty Spurs…and continued in San Antonio at the Pegasus and the Annex. Many thanks go out to Kevin McCarthy for making all the arrangements and keeping the group informed. We also want to thank Canyon Lake BEARS Gary and Denny for cooking out and feeding the bears after a long day on the River. It was a great meal with great friends.
Of course there were also the regularly scheduled events such as the breakfasts, Bears Night Out Dinners, Beer Busts….etc. We hope that you got to attend at least a few of these events and invite you to check out the calendar to see whats coming up! Its your club and your input is always welcome. If you have an idea for an event or would like to host a get together at your place….just give us a shout.
WOOFs n GRRRRs
Well, its that time of year…the weather is beginning to cool (a little) and school is back in session. That means Back To The Woods is just around the corner! For those of you who have signed up already….its time to dust off that tent, grab those tent stakes and tarps and start packing for what is sure to be another great time at the TCC Landsite. If you have not signed up already, you might want to consider now, as the last month or so is when the registrations really start to come in. You can register online HERE. If you want to sign up the old fashioned way, you can contact the run coordinator (Kelly Stephens) and he can send an application to you via email. Either way the earlier you sign up, the better. If you decide to go, we hope you have a GREAT time and enjoy a weekend in the woods with the Bears.
With Back To The Woods just around the corner, volunteers are needed to help with making the camp-out run as smoothly as possible. Because this is OUR club’s event,…we need OUR members who are willing to help, to step up and volunteer. We see the need for approx 12-15 members who can volunteer about an hour during the weekend to help make sure things go as smoothly as possible. If you can and are able to help. please contact Kelly at President@heartoftexasbears.org. The more volunteers we get the better! THANK YOU in advance for supporting YOUR club.
